Production of Renewable Energy
Solar and wind power are the most environmentally friendly methods of energy production. Korea Zinc operates Australia's largest solar power plant as of 2018 through its renewable energy and green hydrogen subsidiary, Ark Energy, located in Australia. The company is also constructing wind farm projects. Furthermore, Korea Zinc manages all aspects of renewable energy production in a 'one-stop' approach, from the highly specialized EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) to operational performance monitoring and management.

Renewable Energy Supply and Use
Renewable Energy Supply and Use
Korea Zinc's renewable energy business is already underway. Ark Energy is not only producing and developing renewable energy but also focusing on supplying renewable energy to help other companies decarbonize.
As a starting point, Ark Energy has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Telstra, Australia's largest telecommunications company. From 2025, when the MacIntyre Wind Farm is completed, Ark Energy has decided to supply clean electricity equivalent to the annual electricity usage of 80,000 Australian households for 10 years.
Ark Energy plans to continuously expand its green energy business through PPAs with companies that need renewable electricity, including power supply to the SMC refinery and hydrogen production.
ESS and Power
Supply
Currently, 25% of the power at the SMC refinery in Australia comes from environmentally friendly energy from solar power plants. The MacIntyre Wind Farm produces enough electricity to supply 630,000 households, resulting in a carbon emission eco-friendly electricity that is not transmitted to the SMC refinery will be stored in an Energy Storage System (ESS) and supplied to electrolysis facilities for green hydrogen production. Korea Zinc is also rapidly preparing large-capacity eco-friendly energy storage systems (GESS) to accelerate energy transition efforts and move towards becoming a competitive green metal producer.
Sun Metals Corporation (SMC)
Established in 1996
Location: Townsville, Queensland, Australia
SMC, which produces high-quality zinc and secondary by-products such as sulfuric acid, is recognized as the world's most environmentally friendly zinc refinery. It was the first smelter in the world to join RE100 and has rapidly implemented eco-friendly self-energy supply.
SMC plans to be the first smelter in the world to produce green metal by using 100% renewable electricity by 2040.
